Check this site when you have a chance. Lake Pedder was flooded in 1972 as part of a hydro-electric development in southwest Tasmania. There has been an ongoing movement to restore the lake by draining the impoundment.
The move to restore the lake has been supported internationally by the David Suzuki Foundation and even in Buenos Aires during 1994, the General Assembly of the IUCN passed resolution calling for its restoration.
There is no doubt that the dams that were constructed to create the development are engineering masterpieces, however, they are just in the wrong place! Many people have commented that if the development was proposed today, there is no way that it would get approval to go ahead based on environmental grounds and the fact that the area was part of a National Park...it is now included within a World Heritage Area.
Take a look at the You Tube links on the page when you have a chance. It gives a good overview of what the lake looked like before its 'temporary' flooding in 1972.
